The first week of November saw the start of Mighty Milers running club at Irving Elementary School. Sixty-two students signed up to participate in the program. The mission of Mighty Milers is to encourage active lifestyles, healthy eating and the importance of drinking water to stay hydrated and active. The students stretch, participate in running drills, games and then check out different routes throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. As the students accumulate miles they earn marathon medals and T-shirts provided by the New York Road Runners Foundation. In addition to these awards, the Kansas State Department of Education provides snack funding through their Power Panther Foundation. The runners will also enjoy new mats provided to the group through a grant from USD 465 foundation. These mats will be used to stretch and work on core strength.
